Rumors set the woods alight, and the fire around Pink Floyd has begun. According to the London Evening Standard, the legendary band?s surviving members will reunite to close out the London 2012 Olympics.

An ?insider? tells the paper, ?It?s long been made clear it would take something very special to get Pink Floyd back together again and it doesn?t get any bigger than the Olympics.? The source then added ?they have been a major part of the nation?s culture over the past 40 years and it will be very fitting that they?re involved when London is on show to the world. It?s hoped everything can be confirmed in the coming weeks.?

The last time Pink Floyd were all onstage together was in 2005 for the Live 8 event. Bob Geldof was able to get the four to set aside any bad blood that had accrued over the years and plug in again. Prior to that, you?d have to go back nearly 25 years to find all four members of the band?s most famous lineup on the same stage.

However, last year, during a performance of ?The Wall? in London, Roger Waters was joined onstage by both David Gilmour and Nick Mason. Gilmour caught the sold-out crowd by surprise when he appeared high atop ?The Wall? to sing and play his spine-chilling solo on the Floyd classic ?Comfortably Numb.? Mason appeared at show?s end joining his former cohorts onstage.

Keyboardist Rick Wright passed away in 2008, just two years after the passing of original mastermind Syd Barrett, who, though?ages removed from the band?s most successful years, was still a central figure in all things Pink Floyd.

With Paul McCartney already on board for either the opening or closing ceremonies, would Pink Floyd take another go round? David Gilmour seems to be the hardest egg to crack here. Both Waters and Mason have planted notions that they would be game for such a reunion, but both have also been cautious on the subject. Mason said it would have to be ?a grander version of Live 8, driven by someone even more major than Bob Geldof.? And following the seemingly impromptu reuniting with Gilmour last year, Waters said on his website ?I should also remind you that tonight is most definitely a one-off.?

So will the London Olympic ceremonies bring them back together? Or will it only happen when pigs fly? Only time, when not ticking away the moments that make up a dull day, will tell.
